6 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Burglars

The thought of your home being broken into is probably one of the worst things that you could ever imagine… If you’ve already been through this ordeal, you’ll be familiar with the heartbreak, concern, and financial burden it can cause.

Unfortunately, in 2020/21 there were over 267 thousand burglaries in England and Wales. It’s a crime that has been around for centuries – and probably will remain for centuries to come. To help you gain insight that’ll (hopefully) help protect your home in the future, we’ve put together 6 things you probably didn’t know about burglars.

1) Most burglars do not carry tools or equipment

Believe it or not, most burglars do not approach your property prepared with various tools and equipment to aid their thieving. Instead, they rely on any items of your own that they spot in the garden, such as gardening tools. With that in mind, be sure to securely lock away any tools that have been left out in the open.

2) Security systems do work

It’s scary the amount of people that don’t bother investing in security systems because they think “ah, it’ll never happen to me.” Why would you want to risk it? Burglars have openly admitted that they skip houses with visible security systems as it’s simply not worth the risk. Seek the help of CCTV installers in Durham.

3) Someone is home in nearly 3 out of 10 burglaries

The thought of someone burgling your home is scary… but the thought of someone burgling your home while you’re inside? Truly frightening. Unfortunately, this is the case for many victims, as it’s been reported that someone is home in around 28% of burglaries. To lessen the chance, make sure all windows and doors are shut even when you’re inside the property.

4) They’re not always premeditated

We’d like to think that, if burglars really are committed to such atrocious plans, they’d at least spend time formulating a genius plan to ensure every aspect is executed perfectly. Well, that’s not the case at all! In fact, 47% of burglaries happen in a ‘spur of the moment’ thing – yes, almost half of them.

5) Most of these crimes are committed during the day

Many people believe that their home is most vulnerable to thieves during night time when it’s dark outside, but this is not the case. With this in mind, it’s fundamental you don’t drop your guard during the day, just because it’s during the day! Most burglaries take place between 10:00 and 15:00, so it’s really important you’re consistently conscious.

6) Only 14% of burglars are arrested

It’s heart-breaking to think that, even after all of the trouble you’ve been through, your burglar might not even be arrested. Unfortunately, it happens! Only 14 in every 100 burglars are arrested, which can make the ordeal even more traumatic for the victims. That’s why it’s really, really important you have the necessary measures in place to deter and prevent such crimes happening in your property.
